‘Project Power’ VFX: Why the Netflix Hit is a Game-Changer

Netflix’s new film Project Power is on fire – literally.

The sci-fi action film, which dropped on the streamer on August 14, follows a former soldier and a cop who try to figure out the source behind a dangerous pill that provides temporary superpowers.

Project Power cast members Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dominique Fishback and rapper Machine Gun Kelly are impressive. But it’s the Project Power VFX that has everyone buzzing.

How Project Power was Lit

Ivan Moran, visual effects supervisor for the film, worked on actually lighting Machine Gun Kelly on fire. It looked cool from the get-go – but there was more work to do.

“The hardest thing of all is the lighting problem,” he says.

Project Power VFX: The Human Torch

Project Power directors Ariel Schulman and Jenry Joost say they set out to do the “human torch” differently.

“How can someone create an energetic explosion as opposed to ‘energy force from the palms of my hand?’ asks Schulman.

You might be surprised to hear that some major inspiration came from two grapes exploding in a microwave. Take a look at the below interview to see how the film’s visual style and effects came about:
