DJI Announces Swap Service for Mavic 2 Pro and DJI Mavic 2 Zoom
DJI has finally announced the predecessor to its popular Mavic camera, and there are two of them: The Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom. Both great options, each camera has an 8 GB internal storage and is powered by a 3830 mAh battery.
“The Mavic 2 is the most advanced DJI camera drone ever built, designed for professionals, aerial photographers and content creators,” says the company. “Incorporating the iconic folding design of the world’s most popular Mavic Pro, the Mavic 2 is a powerful platform with new gimbal-stabilized cameras and advanced intelligent features like Hyperlapse and ActiveTrack for easier and more dynamic storytelling. With an impressive flight time of up to 31 minutes and a more stable video transmission system, Mavic 2 delivers the optimal flight experience for capturing epic shots.”
However, the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom feature some important differences. The company has also announced a new swapping service so that users can upgrade their camera assemblies.
The Mavic 2 Zoom can record from a distance with its hybrid zoom system and 24-48mm lens. This results in more compression (you won’t be able to do this with the DJI Mavic 2 Pro). DJI says that the camera is the first foldable consumer drone to come with optical zoom.
The Mavic 2 Zoom also has a Dolly Zoom effect and a 12 MP camera with a 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor. Finally, the camera is able to capture a crisp 48 MP Super Resolution Photo by taking multiple images and then stitching them together.
The price of the Mavic 2 Zoom is $1,249.
However, the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, made by Swedish camera maker Hasselblad, has a larger 1″ CMOS sensor that records using its 10-bit DLog-m. It can also get a 20-bit HDR video. The camera also features an adjustable aperture that can go from f/2.8 to f/11 and has a fixed 24mm wide angle lens.
The DJI Mavic 2 Pro can shoot videos in the 4K video at 30fps, 720p at 120fps and H.265 codec. In the camera’s sports mode, the drone can be used at a maximum speed of 44 mph.
The price of the Mavic 2 Pro is $1,449.
New Swapping Service
You cannot release a Mavic 2 camera from its gimbal assembly and swap it out the way you can with an Inspire 2 camera. For safety reasons, DJI is not selling the Zoom and Pro cameras individually so you can swap them out. Instead, DJI has announced a swapping service operated through the company’s tech support locations, similar to the way Canon has a PL to EF mount swap. Details and costs of the program have not yet been released, but many filmmakers are excited about the opportunity to update their cameras.
The company has warned users against trying to swap the cameras out themselves; this is not recommended because it could damage the equipment and require an expensive repair.
Do you think you’ll be using the DJI Mavic Pro 2 or the DJI Mavic Pro Zoom? And would you partake in the new swapping service? Let us know in the comments!
